Director of Technology
Although my promotion to Director of Technology is somewhat recent, I have already begun innovating on behalf of the Invention Studio. Firstly, I am working to improve the employee-management software by allowing student ID cards to act as sign-in keys. This helps other Prototyping Instructors login more efficiently and start helping users faster.
In addition, I am currently designing several new applications to be implemented in the Invention Studio. For example, I am creating a new informational display system to better inform users and employees of equipment wait times, Studio open-hours, and COVID-19 capacity limits. This system will help streamline use of the Invention Studio and notify users when they should enter the space. Furthermore, I am building an online database to help manage inventory and to lay the groundwork for retail store that sells raw materials within the Invention Studio that will provide an extra source of revenue for the space.

Laser Master
As the Invention Studio's Laser Master, I ensure that the laser cutters are operational and can meet the various needs of all users. This includes cleaning the lenses and mirrors, aligning the lasers, and fixing any urgent maintenance issues. To solve such issues, I consult the equipment manual, disassemble the machine, and contact the manufacturer if necessary. I generally rectify any maintenance problems within 24 hours because functioning laser cutters are necessary for the Invention Studio to continue functioning at such a high level.
In addition, I continually practice advanced manufacturing techniques with the laser cutters. For example, before engraving an image, I often dither it beforehand to improve the engraving quality, as shown to the left. I will also use the rotary tool to engrave cylindrical items such as glasses and rings. As a Laser Master, I also train apprentices and run workshops to share my knowledge with others. I emphasize hands-on learning so that my apprentices and trainees feel comfortable performing maintenance and advanced techniques. I continually ask if anyone needs clarification, and at the end of each meeting or workshop, I ask for feedback so that I can improve my teaching methods. |
Prototyping Instructor
As a prototyping instructor, I volunteer three hours per week to teach members of the Georgia Tech community on how to safely operate the tools in the Invention Studio, such as the laser cutters, 3D printers, waterjets, and other manufacturing instruments. The Invention Studio's first priority is safety; we ensure that all of our users are building projects safely.
Additionally, I provide tours of the Invention Studio to current and prospective students as well as company representatives. Being a Prototyping Instructor means fostering a community of makers, so we actively encourage coming to the space even if you do not have any exposure or prior knowledge about engineering or prototyping. We are happy to teach you and help you with any of your projects.

Personal Growth
I truly enjoy working at the Invention Studio because I can meet so many incredible makers who inspire me to embrace my creativity and my passion for building. The Invention Studio is much more than just a workplace to me. Every time I walk into the Invention Studio, whether I’m on a shift or not, I learn something new. The other prototyping instructors are so willing to share their knowledge because they truly care about the space and want to make it better. There is a really tight-knit community full of makers at the Invention Studio, and I am so glad that I am part of it. The Invention Studio feels like home to me.
